Artist's Comments

This, my friends, is why you should never, ever let UDE manage a card game.

Digi-Battle Card Game, 1999: The rarity system is pretty much kept the same as in Japan (common, Rare, Gold Title, Holo), but the game rules were botched. A lot. Among the most noticeable differences was how scoring was calculated; in Japan it was more like life points, but in America, gaining points was the aim of the game. This game didn't need a huge Magpie Factor in Japan, where the game itself was sufficient; without that strong backbone, it's a dead series.

Also, the Japanese Starter decks were/are marketed a lot better. Seriously. There are reasons why the game is still going in the Land of the Rising Sun.

As a note, I'm still not quite sure whether Angewomon is a Rare or not, and Magnadramon is a promo. Doncha just love it when one can get almost all of one line in a shot? :D

Street Digi-Battle (2000): But wait, it gets worse. Since the first card game flopped after about a year, they reinvented it, with new card backs, new graphics, and a completely new card layout! Great, isn't it? [/sarcasm]

Seriously, though? I smell a botch cover-up. I am unsure of UDE's involvement in these cards, but it seriously wouldn't surprise me if such radical changes to the game were made so as to cover up the Digi-Battle mishap.

Also, maybe it's just my inner artist talking, but the CGI looks...tacky...compared to the good ol' fashioned Bandai art that continues to hold steady in Japan.

The rarities are the same as in the Digi-Battle Card Game. The problem is...we have nothing to compare it to. This game didn't even touch Japanese shores, likely with good reason.

This lasted all the way into Tamers. Eh, they must've done something right.

Digimon Collectible Card Game (2004): I...really don't know what to say about this. They fixed the "indistinguishable rarity" problem with that triangle; the one on Silphymon there just says "H," but common, uncommon, and rare cards are marked as well. Since they were more clearly aiming for collectibility, this is understandable, but it wouldn't have hurt in the beginning.

Bottom line: UDE should be left to trading cards, not trading card games.

*sigh* also why i don't like the new pokemon art, despite it being shiny. does EVERYTHING need to look 3D?

its even more lame with Digimon because they have a lot of well designed characters that could be rendered well.

At least Kagemaru Himeno's art seems to have maintained its quality, and Sugimori's gotten better in terms of making his Pokémon clip art look less fake...

Otherwise, yeah, this is why I've sold most of my LV.X cards. When/if my own card game gets published, there'll be no crappy "OH LOOK I THREW A BUNCH OF CGI POLYGONS TOGETHER!"

See, polygons works if you're drawing, um, that polygon pokemon thing. which I don't like, but it's appropriate in that case :P

(I hate those stupid non animal looking pokeymanz, but ehhhhh I also dislike the humanoid type ones :P )

I think maybe Himeno was the other one I liked aside from Mitsuhiro Arita... consistently quality, damn. *mad props*

Even Arita has tried crappy CGI style. Arita did that Ho-oh EX. It doesn't look AS tacky as some other EX's/LV X's I've seen, but...

[link] This is, without a doubt, my fave art on an EX card EVER. :D Note the lack of CGI, and the decently-high price tag.

While I have to agree that Upper Deck botched quite a few things when it came to bringing the series stateside... I can't help but ask. You got any Series 3 booster cards? I'm just missing THREE goldprints. ^^;;
